However, there are few published papers on the Lafia-Obi coal. Obaje and Obaje et al. described the petrographic and depositional environments of the coal bearing strata of the Awgu Formation, and also subdivided the coal beds and interseam sediments into three different coal facies, namely: (a) vitrinite–fusinite, (b) trimaceritic and (c) shaly coal facies, respectively.
The Lafia-Obi coal which is of high-medium volatile bituminous rank with estimated reserves of 128.3million tonnes could be used to establish small sized modular coal-fired Independent Power Plants (IPPs) for the generation of electricity in the state.
The Lafia-Obi coal is found within the Awgu Formation of the Turonian–Santonian depositional cycle ( Fig. 2 ), and has a proven coal reserve of over 22 million tons [3] . The coal deposit occurs as numerous seams in a belt, which runs through Obi-Hobol and Akulungu-Akpum. However, there are few published papers on the Lafia-Obi coal.
Lafia-Obi coal, the only local coal with good coking properties is however laden with excessive ash and sulphur contents of about 26.3% and 2.3% respectively (Taskforce, 1987). The Lafia-Obi coal deposit has been found to be geologically faulty and the minimum estimated cost of mining it per ton was at N87.50 as at 1977 (Taskforce, 1987).
Subsequent prospecting was conducted and twenty-two coal mine sites/deposits were discovered with varying reserves. Lafia/Obi coal is one of them with proven reserve of 21.42 million tonnes [3]. Lafia/Obi coal is bituminous and this grade of coal is important as fuel because it burns slowly, provides a lot of heat and is

within the known coal areas at Enugu, Ezinmo, Owukpa, Okabba, and Oggboyega and later in the seventies at Lafia-obi. Udi mine, located at the foot of a range of Enugu hills, was the scene of the first ever Nigerian mining activity in 1906. Thereafter Oghete, Iveallal and Asaba in that order were worked and exhausted between 1917 and 1967.

ENERGY OUTPUT ASSESSMENT OF LAFIA-OBI COAL IN A FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTOR E. O Ilyas, et al Nigerian Journal of Technology Vol. 37, No. 4, October, 2018 968 Figure 1: Electricity demand projection in Nigeria (Sambo, 2008) Therefore, its value must be monitored and maintained
The technology of fluidized bed coal combustion (FBC) and its advantages over conventional coal burning systems is now well established and is extensively reported in the literature. There is also some emphasis in literature about the suitability of Lafia-Obi coal in FBC. However, there is little quantitative or qualitative information on theperformance of Lafia-Obi in FBC.
coal samples. The volatile matter of Lafia-Obi coal is close to that of the foreign coals; while a large difference exists between Chikila coal and the foreign ones. It was observed elsewhere that the Lafia-Obi coal is higher in maturity than the Chikila coal [17] and volatile matter is known to decrease with increase in rank [18,19].

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION The Obi--Lafia area is situated between 8and 830'N latitude and 830' and 930'E longitude, of Plateau State, Nigeria (Fig.l). Adjoining the Obi area, are Agwantashi, Agaza, Kanje and Awe. These areas are also being explored for coking coal. STRATIGRAPHY As Obi (Lafia) is essentially part of the Middle Benue Valley, the ...

Because mineral matter is finely distributed within the matrix, Nigerian Lafia coal is nonresponsive to conventional processing techniques. However, testing has shown that Lafia coal can he upgraded by selective oil agglomeration. The optimum oil concentration was found to be 10 mL of paraffin per 25 g of coal. A product containing 6% ash and 1.9% sulfur was obtained …
Lafia-Obi coal has the lowest volatile matter of 22.25%, followed by Onyeama Sample with values of 34.97% and Garin Maiganga (Gombe) with 37.05% while percentage volatile matter for semi-cokes are 3.71% for Onyeama, 2.42% for …
Results obtained revealed that the moisture content of Onyeama, Lafia-Obi and Garin Maiganga coal are 3.03, 2.93 and 6.35%, respectively with corresponding ash content of the semi-coke as 25.10, 28.54 and 42.01% in that order. x-ray fluorescence revealed high mineral matter content with highest concentration of copper and lead (10400 and 32500 ...
The coal was taken from the Lafia–Obi site in the MBT of Nigeria; the coal particle sizes varied from 10 mm to 25 mm. The schematic description of the fluidized-bed combustion is given in Fig. 1 . In order to enhance the combustion the air inflow is divided by two lines.
1 Introduction Today, coal is utilized in large tonnages for the generation of electricity in power plants. Latest estimates indicate that 41% of electric power generation depends on coal [1] . With continued global climate change concerns, efforts continue worldwide to achieve cleaner and more efficient coal combustion for energy production.

High segregation of coal fly ash was observed, while metallurgical coal grouped together with high-ranking coals of Okaba, Enugu and Obi (Lafia). Further work revealed some of these coals as having high gross calorific value (7908 kcal kg(-1) for Enugu coal; 7200 kcal kg(-1) for Okaba) and low sulphur thereby making them efficient fuel materials.
The highest VM was observed in the Lafia-Obi coal, followed by Garin-Maiganga coal, and lowest VM of the Enugu coal. The VM of the analyzed coal samples (Except for the Enugu and Imiegba coals) is considerably higher than other Nigerian coals, such as Onyeama (35 wt%), Ogwashi (27.8 wt%), Ezimo (32 wt%), Inyi (30 wt%), and Ogboyoga (30.4 wt ...
